Pope Benedict XVI will make the first ever official Papal state visit to the United Kingdom from 16 to 19 September 2010 (the trip to the UK by Pope John Paul II in 1982 was a pastoral visit) and the four day UK tour will begin in Edinburgh.
It is estimated that up to 1 billion television viewers around the world will watch his arrival at Edinburgh Airport.
From there, the Pope will travel directly to the Palace of Holyroodhouse where he will be received by Her Majesty the Queen at approximately 11.00am and attend a reception in his honour.
The public will not be able to view the Pope on his journey from the airport to Holyroodhouse. The opportunity to see him will come when he leaves the palace.
The Catholic Church has organised a St Ninian's Parade on Princes Street which will take place while the Pope is with the Queen. This event will include pipers, historic characters and children from St Ninian's schools across Scotland (Catholic, Episcopalian and non-denominational). The Parade will begin at Regent Road and progress along Princes Street. More information on the parade can be found at www.stniniansday.co.uk
Please note that all plans are provisional and may change
