Tall Order For Scotland Men

European Mens Basketball Championships 2008Basketball European C Division Championships

FIBA Europe has confirmed the entries for basketball's European C Division Championships, being hosted in Edinburgh, June 16th to 21st this year.

The entries to the eight team tournament make interesting reading for Scotland, who will face stiff competition from across Europe.

The full line-up for the tournament is:
Andorra, Azerbaijan, Gibraltar, Malta, Moldova, San Marino, Scotland, Wales

The tournament is being supported by the City of Edinburgh Council and will take place at Edinburgh University's Centre for Sport and Exercise.

Head Coach, Ian Maclean, who represented Scotland at 2 European tournaments, including captaining them in 2002, commented:

"It's an interesting mix of nations and, as always, the tournament will be competitive. I've no doubt a few of these teams will be able to put quality personnel on the floor. That said, we certainly have the ability to cause all these teams problems."

Despite Maclean's best efforts as a player, he never managed to lead his team to a tournament win at this level, finishing 3rd in a tournament he feels they should have won. He's planning on rectifying that as a coach:

"With home court advantage and good support behind us, our goal of winning the tournament is certainly achievable and we're not contemplating anything less."

Having not competed in the 2006 championships due to Commonwealth Games commitments, the Scots faced 6 of their 7 opponents when they last competed in European competition in 2004, when they finished 3rd behind Andorra and Luxembourg, who have since progressed to level B.

The unknown quantity for the Scot's will be Moldova who they haven't met since 2002, while Andorra may present the biggest challenge, having won 3 of the last 5 tournaments.

Keep an eye on over the coming weeks for more ticket and event information.
