Venue Description
Designed as a variety theatre, but opened in 1929 as a cinema at the height of the 'movies' wave, and run as a cinema for 40 years, it was saved from demolition by local campaigning, and listed in 1974. It underwent major refurbishment in 1993, and is said to be the largest proscenium arch theatre in the UK. Owned and operated by Live Nation, it presents a very successful programme of large-scale concerts and entertainment, including musicals, classical music and opera. it offers opportunity for conferences, receptions, and functions, in a range of lounge spaces and its obvious attraction is its superb 3000-seat auditorium with excellent acoustics.
