Event DetailsWhen you step inside Lauriston Castle, you see it just as it was in 1926, when it was left to the nation by the last private owner, Mrs Reid.
The Castle and the collections it contains is one of Scotland's greatest gifts. Collections include, Italian Furniture, Sheffield Plate, Crossley Wool Mosaics and Blue John ornaments. The interiors of the house are the work of Mrs Reid's husband, Mr W R Reid, the owner of Morison & Co., a leading Edinburgh cabinet making business.
The beautiful grounds were laid out by William Henry Playfair in the 1840s. Much of the planting dates to this period. The award-winning Japanese Friendship garden, gifted by the prefecture of Kyoto, is a tranquil place to contemplate.
Throughout the year Lauriston Castle hosts an exciting and creative programme of events and activities. The Adult and Family Craft Workshop Programme has more than 60 different arts and craft classes and activities throughout the year, many of which take their inspiration from the beautiful Edwardian interior of the Castle. Workshops listed as 'Family' have something to offer the full age spectrum from toddlers, to teenagers, to grandparents, although occasionally a minimum age limit is set. Please note that children under 8 years of age cannot be left unattended at workshops.
Over the year there are around 30 different lectures to choose from. These lectures offer a rare opportunity to listen to some of Scotland's foremost experts. A tour of the Castle with coffee and cakes is included in the price, with the opportunity to meet the lecturer and visit parts of the building not usually open to the public. The lectures themselves last two to two and a half hours and cost £8, but for special events, the price, duration and refreshments provided may differ.
Workshops and lectures are hugely popular. Pre-booking and advance payment (where applicable) are essential. To secure your place, call Margaret Findlay on 0131 529 3963 or email email@example.com.
