Live, all-female, full-contact ROLLER DERBY!

Following the release of Drew Barrimore's major film 'Whip It', telling the story of a young girl's discovery of Roller Derby , Edinburgh's very own AULD REEKIE ROLLER GIRLS are bringing LIVE Roller Derby to the Scottish Capital!

This double header game will feature two Derby bouts:

Bout 1 - starts at 2pm
Newcastle Roller Girls and Middlesborough Milk Rollers join forces to play against Auld Reekie's Cannon Belles

Bout 2 - starts at 4pm (the main event)
The Lincolnshire Bombers make their first trip to Edinburgh to bout Auld Reekie's Twisted Thistles

WHAT IS ROLLER DERBY?
Roller Derby is a full-contact sport, with two teams of skaters skating round an oval track to score points. The name of the game is to get your team's Jammer- the point scorer- past members of the opposing team, as she scores a point for each player she passes. Players can use hips, shoulders and booties to ‘block' players from the opposing team (this is where the full contact aspect comes into it!). It's fast, its tough and its great to watch!

Roller Derby started in Texas, USA in the 30s as a travelling show, with teams made up of male and female skaters. There were few rules, and a lot of injuries.

The game we play now, follows strict guidelines to ensure safety, and was resurrected in America in 2002. There are currently around 25 Derby Leagues in the UK, and many more are appearing across Europe. This is a true modern phenomenon, and a revolution in female sport.

WHO ARE AULD REEKIE ROLLER GIRLS?
I'm glad you asked! ARRG formed in April 2008 in response to the growing number of teams which started appearing in the UK.

We have gone from strength to strength and have received acclaim from high profile UK AND American leagues after we became the youngest league to play in the finals of the first European Derby Tournament, Roll Britannia. We are currently ranked 4th in Europe. We are pretty pleased about that, actually!
